I came to teach, and yet I learn.
It seems fitting that I use my last few days in Trinidad (it pains me to say that) to sum up my stay, and fill in the gaps of the story of my adventure.
Two days ago was our last day at Maple Leaf, and it was a surreal feeling knowing that you’re saying good bye to all these now familiar faces and personalities for the last time. For someone who finds good byes as awkward as I do, I think I did my best not to put my foot in my mouth. But if I stop and allow myself to realize how much I’m going to miss everything here, I think my parents would have a hard time convincing me out of chucking my return ticket to Toronto into the Caribbean Sea.
My third placement was a roller coaster of countless learning experiences. I learned the importance of organization, and prioritizing lesson planning over other distractions. I am very proud of myself because I worked hard, and I managed to also make lots of friends outside of the school walls. My new friends in Trinidad are just d besssst, if I could take them all home in a suitcase with me, I wouldn’t think twice about it.
At school I found out that I can apparently handle arranging a field trip to places I would not have been able to point out on a map for you two weeks ago. Collecting money and figuring out who and how much to pay, when the stacks of bills decorated with birds and exotic plants look no different that monopoly money to me was an interesting experience, no doubt.
But the thing I found the most comfort in, is that everything will eventually work it’s way out, if you just know when to ask for help and who is willing to provide it.
The last couple of days are dedicated to some well deserved liming. I refuse to believe that there are some people here that I will not see again! Trinis love to travel and have made it clear that I’m expecting visits from everyone!
